Programs/Activities:

The Association year began on July 29, 2004 with the SCACE Summer Board Retreat at the Renaissance Hotel in Charleston, SC.   An annual evaluation and planning session was led by Bernice Bryant along with a review of the association’s by-laws and Board Position descriptions.   The Mission Statement, the 2003-2004 SWOT analysis and Short-Term/Long-Term goals were discussed and planning for the Summer/Fall and Winter/Spring Drive-Ins and Annual Conference began.

A Fall Drive-In Workshop was held on September 29, 2004 at the Center of Excellence of Technology, Midlands Technical College, NE Campus, in Columbia, SC.   Following breakfast and an opening welcome, Bernice Bryant and Brent Stewart co-moderated a panel of experts in exploring various partnerships between higher education and South Carolina government as a way of revitalizing the SC economy.   Panelists included: Dr. Andrew Sorenson, President, University of South Carolina; Dr. Barry Russell, President, Midlands Technical College; Ms. Clare Morris, Director of Communications, SC Department of Commerce; Mr. Neil Richards, President, HunterStone, Inc.   A tour of the Center and lunch were followed by a SCACE Board meeting and a Conference Committee meeting.

Winter Drive-In was hosted by Nestle USA, Prepared Foods Division in Gaffney, SC on January 20, 2004.   Following registration and a breakfast, Mr. Pat Emrich, Factory Manager, provided an overview of the facility operations.   Participants were then divided into small groups and given an extensive tour of the plant.   Lunch was provided by Nestle followed by a brief SCACE Board meeting and a Conference Committee meeting.

The Annual Conference was held at the Francis Marion Motel in Charleston, SC on April 27-29, 2005.   The theme for the conference was “Tools of the Trade: Trends, Technology & Training”.   The conference opened with a welcome and keynote address by Mayor Joseph Riley, Mayor of the City of Charleston, who discussed future trends and opportunities for Charleston and for municipal governments.   Bobby Pearce, former Chairman of the regional board of business executives involved in technology and knowledge-based businesses called ThinkTEC, presented a session concerned with “Accelerating the Growth of High-Tec and Knowledge-Based Business in the Charleston Region”.   Two breakout sessions entitled “Career development Facilitator Training (CDF)” and “Legal Issues in Experiential Education” completed the afternoon programs.   “The Future of Employee Selection Procedures” was presented by Richard Davis of the McClain Group as the opening session for the second day of the conference.   Breakout sessions covered the following topics: “Hiring Trends”, “The dual role of performance manager and mentor”, “Serving the future entrepreneur”, and “Electronic Portfolios”.   The luncheon speaker, Ernie Passailaigue, discussed the “South Carolina Lottery and How it Works for South Carolina”.   Two breakout sessions entitled “Recruiting Practices Shop Talk: What I Wish You Did…” and “Global Strategies: International Employment for American Students” completed the day.   Janis Allen of Performance Leadership Consulting presented the keynote address on the final day of the conference entitled “You can Make or Break My Day”.

The Annual Business Meeting held on April 29 at the end of the conference closed out the year.   A new slate of officers, board members, and committee chairs were presented and elected.   The past officers, board, and conference leaders were thanked and recognized for their service to the association.   The Unsung Hero Award was presented to Jane Locke, the Honorary Lifetime Member Award was presented to Boyce Cox, and Special Recognition and Appreciation for Support given to the Organization awards were presented to Dwight Bailey and Allison Brown-Owens.
