Programs/Activities:

The Association year began on July 27-28 with the SCACE Summer Board Retreat in Columbia, SC. In New Business discussed by the board, several topics where covered which included: awards, board member term limits, board member job descriptions, ePay, and joint ventures with other organizations. Time was spent discussing the SWOT analysis along with short and long term goals for the association. The Fall Drive-in has been set for Furman University in Greenville, SC, and the Spring Drive-in is still in the planning stages. The Annual Conference planning was kicked off at this time which covered program ideas, a conference theme, and the formation of the conference committees. The final bit of business was Whitley’s To-Do-List for the board members. This should be a great year!

A Fall Drive-in was held at Furman University in Greenville , SC on August 29, 2006. The group heard from Hank Hayatt, Director of Community & Economic Research with the Greenville Chamber of Commerce who spoke about the results of the “Angelou Economics Survey”. Another presentation was conducted by Susan Zeiger, Internship Program Director in which she highlighted Furman’s “engaged Learning Philosophy”. After lunch a formal SCACE meeting was held. Furman was a gracious host, and special thanks go to John Barker and Sandra Clark for putting the Drive-in together!

The Spring Drive-in was held at Verizon Wireless in Charleston, SC on January 26, 2007. Verizon was a gracious host and provided the attendees with some valuable information about their company.

Our Annual Conference was held at Daufuskie Island, SC on May 16 – 18. The theme of the conference was Back to the Basics. Daufuskie Island provided a wonder backdrop for the conference beginning and ending with a ferry ride which was the only way to access the island, to valuable information provide by presenters to great networking opportunities, and to general fun.

The conference opened with Ken Seay from Michelin who spoke on “Leadership in Today’s Environment”, and closed with Aunt Pearlie Sue who spoke about Gullah-Flavored Folktales which included a dancing routine by a cast of brave warriors. Our lunch speaker on Thursday, Charlie Clark with the Hilton Head-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce Visitor’s and Convention Bureau provided us with some great history about Daufuskie Island. The breakout sessions offered the group a generous variety of topics covering recruitment, diversity, interviewing, and panel discussions.

In order to have a well rounded conference you have to have networking opportunities and this one had plenty with a wonderful reception out on the lawn, a golf cart scavenger hunt, bocce, and gator bingo. These activities provided wonderful opportunities to meet new members and to get reacquainted with those who have been around for a while.

As usual the door prizes offered some great items. Thanks to everyone who provided the door prizes.

The Conference Committee did a wonderful job of putting the conference together. Thank you!

Some very important information was provided during the Membership report. Our overall membership has fallen about 40%. Each of us must take the initiative to bring in new members and help the association grow.

Deb Herman announced that the 2008 conference will be held on Pawley’s Island and the dates are May 14 – 16, 2008. More information will be forthcoming on the conference and the Fall Drive-In.

Another busy year passes leading us to focus on the future of the association and striving to make SCACE an even better association, but we need everyone's help to do so.
